Got questions about Overdraft Options? We've got answers!

Life happens!  We get it – sometimes you don’t have quite enough in your checking account to cover costs.  That’s why TruChoice has overdraft options for our members.

Whether it’s a debit card purchase, your mortgage payment, or an automatic payment you forgot to account for, we’ve got you covered.

Here is some information on overdraft options available to members with a TruChoice checking account:

  • Overdraft protection:

    • An optional service you can add to your checking account that links to a savings account and/or our ER line of credit. If you overdraw your account, we will use available funds in your linked accounts to cover your transaction if there is not enough in your checking account.
      • Overdraft protection is automatically linked to your primary savings account. If you would like to remove this option, link your other accounts for overdraft protection, or change the sequence of your overdraft accounts, you can do so by reaching out to TruChoice

      • Transfers from a savings account will incur an ‘Share Transfer’ fee (see fee schedule) when used to cover a transaction that would normally incur a NSF(non-sufficient funds) or Privilege Pay fee (see below)

      • Transfers from our ER line of credit will not incur a fee, but will be charged interest per the terms of our ER line. Transfers from the line to your checking account are made in increments of $300. See your credit account agreement for details
  • Debit card overdraft services:

    • This requires you to opt into this service.
    • If opted in, this allows TruChoice to approve ATM and everyday (one time) debit card transactions if you don’t have enough funds in your checking account or in linked accounts (see overdraft protection above) at the time of the transaction. This does not apply to checks, or other transactions such as Bill Pay, ACH or reoccurring (automatic) transactions
    • Coverage will incur a fee per transaction (see fee schedule)
  • Privilege Pay Services:

    • Privilege Pay is a service offered by TruChoice to help you cover transactions when you do not have available funds in your checking account or linked accounts (see overdraft protection).
    • Each transaction covered by Privilege Pay will incur a fee. See fee schedule for details.
    • Privilege Pay is given at the discretion of the credit union, and can be revoked at any time, including in cases of
      • Excessive use
      • Account abuse
      • Non-repayment of overdrawn funds
    • Privilege Pay is automatically put on checking accounts after they have been opened for 60 days. Automatic Privilege Pay includes
      • Payment of checks
      • Payment of ACH items
      • Payment of automatic (reoccurring) transactions
      • Bill Pay
      • Teller transactions
    • Privilege Pay is available for ATM and everyday (one time) debit card transactions, and requires opting in.
    • Privilege Pay limits will be either $500 or $1000 on existing accounts, depending on factors determined by the credit union. Allowed negative balance amounts include fees.
  • Member responsibilities:

    • Negative balance accounts must be brought positive within 10 days.
      • If accounts remain negative, on the 10th day Privilege Pay will be revoked until accounts are brought positive.
      • Accounts still negative after 45 days will be closed, and you will remain responsible to the credit union for the balance owed.
